Records of Wisconsin National Guard and State Guard service. Information is contained on 3"x5" cards and includes enlisted and officer name, home address, birth date and place, physical characteristics, enlistment date, term years, organization, station, previous service, date of discharge and cause of discharge, and related information. Services include: National Guard Service including part of WWII (yellow cards), State Guard WWI (blue cards), State Guard WWII (pink cards), Wisconsin State Guard Reserve WWI (peach cards), and Naval Militia (pale blue cards). Also included at the end of the series is correspondence with the War Dept., 1920-1926, with corrections for some of the records.

An adjutant general was first appointed as an aide by the territorial governor in 1839. Over the next two decades the position gradually acquired more authority, supervising the everyday affairs of the state militia (WIHV91-A663). The Wisconsin National Guard was established as such by Chapter 208, Laws of 1879, but it was preceded by both a territorial and a state militia (WIHV91-A663).
